New Life Charitable Trust: A Sanctuary of Dignity and Care

New Life Charitable Trust was founded on October 2, 1991, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s Birth Anniversary. This initiative is the outcome of a shared vision between Mrs. G. Lalitha and Mr. A. A. Swamy to provide a secure and dignified life for the abandoned and the elderly.

Our Founders' Journey

Mrs. G. Lalitha drew inspiration for “New Life Home” from her grandfather, Mr. Kothandarama Iyer, a dedicated freedom fighter. Driven by this legacy of service, she took voluntary retirement from her position at the Office of the Accountant General (A&E) to fully devote her time to the organization’s daily operations.

Mr. A. A. Swamy’s personal history forged his resilience and commitment. Having lost his mother at a young age and growing up in a boarding school, he understood the struggles for sustenance and education firsthand. This experience fuelled his dedication to the betterment of abandoned parents. He resigned from his job at the Madras Electricity Board in 1996 to become the full-time President of New Life Home as the number of residents steadily increased.

Growth and Community Support:

The Trust began humbly with just two residents—one visually impaired, the other with locomotor disabilities. Today, the Home provides care for 61 senior citizens.

The growth has been sustained by incredible support and dedication:

  • Dr. M. Gopalaswamy was instrumental in establishing essential basic medical health services at the New Life Health Centre.
  • Mr. N. R. Govindarajan, our Chartered Accountant, has served as a constant guide since our inception, providing invaluable honorary service.
  • A special mention of thanks goes to the NRIs of Dubai, whose commendable efforts in organizing a blood donation drive raised a staggering 12.5 Lakhs for the construction of our facility. We assure every donor that their Herculean efforts were instrumental in building this sanctuary.
  • We are profoundly grateful to the numerous individuals in Doha, Singapore, and Chennai whose donations have supported the completion of the building and the ongoing maintenance of the Home and the Gaushala.

New Life’s major sustenance is derived from the constant, encouraging presence and involvement of our well-wishers, whose financial, material, and emotional support has been our steadfast pillar.

Expanding Our Mission

Our commitment to service has branched into several key areas:

Gaushala (Cow Shelter):

Recognizing the need to protect native cows—symbols of our land's heritage—we established a Gaushala. It not only provides fresh milk for our residents and local village children but also ensures the safety of these animals from being sent to slaughter.

Orphanage for Children:

Children either abandoned by their parents or with a single parent were brought under the New Life Charitable Trust’s Home for the aged and children. Infant boys and girls were sheltered and nurtured. The senior citizens gave them the much-needed parental love and care which they too got in return. New Life Charitable Trust ran a kindergarten school for the tiny tots of the ashram as the village. Children were sent to school, who later went to college and got placed in good positions in the society. During COVID period boys and girls could not be kept under the same roof. Therefore, they were sent to their families. As per the government norms they must be housed in different blocks which we could not provide at that time. Therefore, the orphanage for children could not be continued.

Educational Support:

The founders believe firmly in accessible education for all deserving economically backward students. With the support of our sponsors, we provide educational assistance to students pursuing higher studies.

Cultural Preservation:

India is a land of rich culture and heritage. We actively preserve and spread ancient traditions through various community outreach programs.
